I am so glad you are looking for private English Lessons. Welcome to Bloomington! If you or your wife or husband are a little shy about speaking English, that is so normal. Many people come here, who have had years of English. Yet, they find that actually using English is really scary. Private lessons change all that. I work with my students in a comfortable place, my home at 120 N. Grant St., next to the public library. And my goal is to remove the fear, and build confidence as we become friends. Let me go into some detail to give you an idea of what I mean by that: CONFIDENCE BUILDING: I want to remove all anxiety and create confidence in my students, immediately. So we relax, drink coffee and tea, and chat a while, every lesson. In an easy safe setting, we build gently speak English. We work with books, news articles, and workbooks, too. We build sentences together. The speech we develop is meaningful. They will remember it and use it themselves, later! Understanding what Americans say is so important. So, I speak at a rather normal pace. Gradually, and very quickly, students see that they recognize more and more of what I am saying. We talk about ways of listening and asking for help that they can use right away. To be able to improve and become fluent, I know that speaking and listening and reading and writing all should be strong. Those skills lean on one another. So I work on them all, gradually, and for short periods of time. HOW MANY LESSONS A WEEK? Most beginning students do best with 2 or 3 lessons a week for one to two hours. I would strongly encourage them to commit to a regular schedule of frequent lessons to really learn well and fast. TUITION PAYMENT SCHEDULE at $17 an hour, person-to-person, (cash or check) or $13 each half hour, over Skype (payment by Paypal): I ask students to pay a month's worth of lessons at the beginning of the month, whenever it is we start. The commitment helps enormously. BUT SOMETIMES STUDENTS HAVE TO MISS LESSONS: There are lots of good reasons to miss a lesson. So, when students text me or call me or email me that they have to miss a lesson, I send them (by email) my most up-to-date calendar. They can choose an available extra day the next week to "make up" the hour they happened to miss.
